The Magnetic
Swipe Reader, MSR, on the POS will sometimes stop working. What this means is
that when a card is swiped nothing happens. Before attempting to fix this issue
you should check if the store is Online. You can do this in the Admin Portal in
Home>Devices and select the location, on the Enter Employee Number screen it
will say if the POS is Online or Offline in the bottom left corner next to the
name of the POS, and when logged into the POS it will say if it is Online or
Offline in the bottom right next to the green Menu button.
If
the store is Offline this is a problem with the network and not the MSR. Not
all of the following steps need to be done to fix the issue. Steps 2 and 3 both
have an equal chance of fixing the issue but it is recommended to do both Steps
2 and 3.
Step 1
Make sure the card
is being swiped the correct way
This is a common mistake. A good
first thing to try is swipe the card with the magnetic strip facing the other
direction.
Step 2
Clean the MSR
The slot where the card is swiped
can get dirty and this will prevent the card from being read. If you have a
Cleaning Card this is the best option however other things work too. Alcohol
wipes and clean clothes will also work if run through the slot. It is not
recommended to use water.
Step 3
Make sure the MSR is
securely connected to the POS
In order to confirm that the MSR
is securely connected to the POS the back panel of the POS will need to be
removed.
Once the back panel is removed
you will need to find where the MSR is plugged in. This is near where the MSR
is attached to the POS. Once the port is found you will need to unplug the
cable and plug it back in. This will often make certain parts of the MSR light
up.
Step 4
Restart the POS
If Steps 1 and 2 are not
successful it is recommended to restart the POS. The power button is under the
green power light on the bottom right corner of the employee facing screen.
Step 5
Contact Brink
If restarting the POS does not
solve the issue of cards not being read when swiped Brink will need to be
contacted.
This will be a basic outline on what to do if a POS is Offline. Unfortunately, certain locations can be unique which adds additional obstacles to network troubleshooting so this will just cover the basics. At any point in this ...
